Petrochemical Industry in India

Petrochemicals are chemicals made from petroleum products. As the chemistry of petroleum was understood, the petrochemical industry flourished. About half a million chemicals are made from petroleum products. These include plastics, medicines, dyes, various polymers, detergents, synthetic fibers, and chemicals used to make fertilizers.

The petrochemical segment that mainly contains polymers, artificial fibres, fibre intermediates and plastic treating is rising at a yearly proportion of 14%. India is estimated to be the 3rd leading consumer of polymers after China and US. Petrochemicals are chemical products resulting from petroleum. The two most common petrochemical modules are olefins (containing ethylene and propylene) and aromatics (containing benzene, toluene and xylene isomers). In the petrochemicals, polymers comprises 70% of end crops of petrochemical market in India. Indian petrochemical manufacturing companies is oligopolistic in nature.

List of Petrochemical Companies of India

• Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) 

Reliance Industries Limited is an Indian multinational conglomerate headquartered in Mumbai. They constructed integrated petrochemical complex at Jamnagar in Gujarat, which is one of the largest refinery in the world. They have various petrochemical companies across the country.

• Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) 

Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL or IOC) is a public sector undertaking, oil and gas company under the ownership of the Government of India. They have various Petrochemical companies in the country.

• Haldia Petrochemicals Limited (HPL) 

Haldia Petrochemicals Limited (HPL) is one among the largest petrochemical companies in India. HPL started its commercial production of petrochemicals in 1984. The headquarters of HPL is located in Kolkata, West Bengal. It has a large petrochemical plant in Haldia and is the largest in Eastern India. Polymers and Chemicals are the products of HPL.

• Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) 

GAIL started polymer business in india by setting up North India's first gas-based Petrochemicals complex. GAIL commissioned the petrochemicals plant successfully in the year 1999. The petrochemical business is one of the core focus areas of GAIL.

• Bongaigaon Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited

Bongaigaon Refinery & Petrochemicals Limited (BRPL) was established in 1974 as a Government Company. It is located at Chirang district of Assam. The refinery today is part of Indian Oil Corporation and is known as Bongaigaon Refinery. 

• Manali Petrochemical Limited

Manali Petrochemicals Limited (MPL) is a petrochemical company in Chennai, since 1986. It manufactures and supply innovative polyurethane raw materials.

• NOCIL (National Organic Chemical Industry Limited)

The Company was established on 1961, at Mumbai. The Company manufactures various organic and inorganic chemicals.

• Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited

Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) is a public sector undertaking situated at Dibrugarh City in Assam, India. It was established in 2016. ethylene, propylene, polypropylene, linear low-density polyethylene and high-density polyethylene are the products of BCPL.

• HPCL-Mittal Energy Limited

HPCL-Mittal Energy Limited (HMEL) is an Indian integrated refining and petrochemical company. It was established in 2007 as a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Mittal Energy Investments Pte Limited (MEIL). The functions of HMEL includes spanning crude oil refining and petrochemical manufacturing. It is a ppp venture. It is headquartered at Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

• Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited

Indian Petrochemicals Corporation Limited (IPCL) was a petrochemicals company in India. IPCL was founded in 1969, as a Government of India undertaking. Its main objective is to promote the development of the petrochemical industry in India. The commercial production of company was started in 1973. IPCL merged with Reliance Industries Ltd. in 2007.

• Jay Polychem India Ltd

Jay Polychem India Ltd is a petrochemical and polymer distribution company located in Delhi, India. It was established in 1991. The company's core expertise lies in sourcing, storage and distribution of Polymers and Petrochemicals.

• Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), is a division of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). The company was incorporated in 1988. The refinery is located at Katipalla of Mangalore. 

• Southern Petrochemical Industries Corporation Ltd (SPIC)

Southern Petrochemical Industries Corporation Limited (SPIC) is an Indian petrochemical company that manufactures fertilizer products. The company is headquartered at Chennai, Tamil Nadu. It was incorporated on 1969.

• Supreme Petrochem Ltd (SPL)

Supreme Petrochem Limited (SPL) is India's largest producer and exporter of polystyrene polymer. It is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It was incorporated in 1995. Polystyrene, Expandable Polystyrene, styrene & polymer are the products of SPL.
